Have you ever gone to a fabric store, or in my case, the garment district or the swap meet and found the most interesting fabric and just fell in love??? That’s what it was like when I saw this fabric. For a couple years, I struggled with wanting to make something with it and wanting to keep it. If I made something with it, I’d no longer have yardage! What to do????
After a lot of thinking and planning for my future, I decided that I needed to work on my pattern drafting as well as certain techniques and skills. I decided that what I need to do is just get busy designing, drafting and sewing and what better way to do this, than to use fabric from my stash? I love a challenge, so choosing fabrics from my stash was a perfect idea.
For the dress, I used the tree-like knit fabric. I underlined the bodice with black power mesh. For the underskirt, I used black swimsuit fabric as well as black power mesh and matte net tulle. I also bought black party taffeta, but didn’t end up using it.
Because the fabric is a knit, I decided to leave the hem, un-hemmed. I like the unfinished look of this “tree” look.
I drafted all the pattern piece one time and got the results I wanted. This is very encouraging for me because it lets me know, I have an understanding of patterns. I can visualize with some accuracy, how they’ll turn out. I may not be as successful with a woven fabric.
I’m so please with how the hood turned out! I drafted the pattern and got it right the first time.
It turned out better than I could have expected!
