This was a great experience for me. I was one of 3 students in my textiles class, chosen to design my own fabric. I know that for my collection in the Palomar Community college Fashion show, I’m going to design a fall, formal line. I’ve chosen about 4 fabrics so far. There just wasn’t much of a variety of fabric to choose from, at my job. It was a last minute decision, and I wasn’t “feeling” my fabric choice and I figured this was going to be one of those “make-it -work-moments”, so I chose a teal crepe fabric. I liked the color, but the fabric was really plain, compared to the other fabrics I chose. I know now, I’ll have to so something to the fabric to “dress it up” or add some special details to it.
We got to the graphics arts building, met with Ken and got started on our digital images. We ran into problems with the images and was starting to get frustrated. When I spoke with Ken, he looked at my fabric and wouldn’t you know it. I had a colored fabric and you can’t do sublimation printing on colored fabric. Feeling frustrated, but determined that we’d walk away from this building that day with our personalized fabric, Marie and I jumped in the car and headed to the nearest fabric store and bought 4 yards of white crepe fabric and headed back to the school, where Ken helped us with our images and got the process in motion. The bonus is, we actually got to do the printing ourselves!! I am grateful for the opportunity to design my own fabric and the experience of going through the printing process ourselves. Thank you Palomar College and Ken Dodson.
